What is CNC Swiss Turning?

The main difference between normal CNC lathes and CNC Swiss turned ones is how the part is manipulated in the machine. In the normal process, the workpiece remains stationary as the tool moves. In the CNC Swiss lathe process, the tools remain stationary as the lathe moves long the Z-axis.

This method of lathe operation offers greater versatility, producing parts that are complete without any need for secondary finishing. Complex and intricate profiles are easily programmed into the machine and completed in small or large volumes.

The Swiss turning process allows for the use of a wide variety of metals including Brass 360, 12L14 and 1215 Steel, Stainless steel type 303, 430FR and 440C, 6061 Aluminum, and Alloy Steels

CNC Swiss Turning Materials

Davenport screw machines manage stock size from 3/32 round to 7/8 round. Davenports can also turn hex stock and square stock to almost any geometry. Typical products turned off a Davenport are fittings, pins, spacers, ball studs, nuts, sleeves, bushings, retainers, dowels, rivets, tube nuts, inserts, compression fittings, sleeves, plugs, screws, knurled pins and lock screws to name just a few.

Manufacturing small parts is what our screw machines do best! We have the capacity to run three shifts managing small 20,000pc orders into millions and millions of parts for a single release or multiple releases. Through our machine upgrade and rebuild program JCGibbons can continue to manage a tolerance of +/- .0007″ on diameters. This preventative maintenance program is one key component as to why JCGibbons is superior to other screw machine companies. What is a screw machine?

Screw machines, being the class of automatic lathes for small and medium sized parts, are used in the high volume manufacture of a vast variety of turned components.

Speaking with reference to the normal definition of the term screw machine, all screw machines are fully automated, whether mechanically (via cams) or by CNC (computerized control), which means that once they are set up and started running, they continue running and producing parts with very little human intervention. This has been true since the 1870s. Mechanical automation came first, beginning in the 1870s; computerized control (via first NC and then CNC) came later, beginning in the 1950s.

The name screw machine is somewhat of a misnomer, because screw machines spend much of their time making things that are not screws and that in many cases are not even threaded. However, the archetypal use for which screw machines were named was screw-making.

What is CNC Turning?

Unlike form tools which utilize the technique of forming a work piece by using a precision ground tool that resembles the pattern of the finished product, CNC turning is a process of which a single point tool removes material parallel to the surface to generate the finished piece. Turning can be accomplished either by manual means on a standard shop lathe or by a CNC (computerized numerical control) lathe. CNC lathes use programs written by operators with a specific set of instructions to achieve the finished work piece.

The work piece can be a variety of sizes depending on the capacity of the lathe that you are working on. Here at JC Gibbons we typically start with either 12’ bars of stock or saw cut blanks. Material grades can range from brass, aluminum, carbon steels, alloys, free machining, stainless steels, bronze, copper, cold forgings and castings to name a few. Our bar fed capacity is 3 inches.

When turning material down on the outside of the part. The lathe will move along the outside diameter cutting from a single point removing material as it’s traversing along two axes. Grooving, facing, knurling and cutting off a part (or parting) are typical moves when operating a lathe on the outside of a work piece. Typical ways to turn the inside of a part are drilling, boring, tapping, single point threading, and reaming.

What is CNC Milling?

Based on the orientation of the main spindle the practice of milling can occur either horizontal or vertical. Unlike a conventional drill press where the work piece is stationary and the cutting tool goes up and down along a z axis a typical milling machine today enjoys the flexibility of three axis x, y, and z. This allows not only the z-axis to go up and down but the x and y axis to move the work piece into the side of the cutter utilizing the top and sides of the cutting tools. There are a variety of milling machines but the most common are called vertical and horizontal mills.

A vertical mill’s spindle is oriented vertically with the cutter rotating on the z axis. Whereas the horizontal milling machine tools are mounted horizontally to the work piece utilizing side and face cutters. Horizontal machines also have a feature called a universal table. This is a rotating table that allows cuts from various angles.

Milling machines can perform numerous tasks. Drilling, tapping, slotting, keyways and contouring are just a few examples of what a mill can do. Mills also have available automated pallet changers and gantry loaders for larger volume milling and seamless change over. Swiss screw machining is a subtractive manufacturing (i.e., machining) process that employs the use of Swiss-type machining equipment. It differs from other machining equipment in that it uses a guide bushing to minimize the distance between the main spindle and the cutting tool. This design difference results in less bending of the workpiece and, consequently, deflection at the cutting surface. The process is often used for the precision manufacture of small cylindrical parts and products in high volumes.

AN OVERVIEW OF

THE SWISS SCREW MACHINING PROCESS

At the beginning of a Swiss screw machining operation, raw material (typically bar or rod stock) feeds into the machine. The headstock clamps onto the material and spins and slides it through a guide bushing into the tool zone, where all of the cutting processes take place. Some operations employ multiple spindles to work with different cutting tools during a single cycle, enabling efficient production of highly complex components.

Parts and products manufactured through the Swiss screw machining and turning processes are small (typically less than 1.25 inches in diameter), cylindrical, and precise. They can be made from a broad selection of metal and non-metal materials, such as metals (e.g., aluminum, brass, and stainless steel), plastics (e.g., PEEK, Delrin and Acetal) and Alloys (e.g., Titanium and Inconel).

Compared to other machining and manufacturing processes, Swiss screw machining offers a number of benefits, such as:

• Greater design versatility: Swiss screw machines can create components that are too expensive or otherwise impossible for traditional machining and manufacturing techniques, such as very small or complicated screws with multiple surface features.

• Broader material suitability: The Swiss screw machining process accommodates a wide range of metal and non-metal materials, all of which can be formed with extreme precision. Additionally, the same machine can be configured and reconfigured to process different materials depending on part and production specifications. This versatility allows clients to be selective with their material choices and choose the one that best fits their project.

• Lower level of deflection: During Swiss screw machining operations, the distance between the workpiece support and the cutting is minimal, which results in less bending in the workpiece and deflection at the cutting surface. This process quality allows manufacturers to achieve tighter tolerances in the machined components.

• Higher production efficiency (at high volumes): Once configured and loaded, a Swiss screw machine can run autonomously, minimizing the amount of operator involvement required. Since the machines can contain multiple spindles and cutting tools, a single pass is often sufficient to create near-net components. Better cost-effectiveness: The Swiss screw machining process allows for the production of precision components in large quantities that often need little to no secondary finishing.

OUR SWISS SCREW MACHINING CAPABILITIES

At Ardel, our team is equipped with four 20mm and three 32mm Citizen Swiss screw machines. The machines’ magazine-style bar feeders hold raw rod stock up to 12 feet in length, allowing for continuous operation and efficiency even for longer parts. Additionally, their twin spindles facilitate the completion of various secondary processes to create different features within the same cycle. This equipment allows us to accommodate workpieces made from almost any type of metal, plastic, or engineering grade material in sizes up to 32 millimeters (1.25 inches) in diameter.

Our Swiss machine tooling is an effective and efficient option for producing components in quantities between 500 and 50,000 units. However, our team can also fulfill orders above or below this range. Typical lead times are 2–3 weeks for prototyping and 4–6 weeks for production. Rush and emergency services are also available.
